Play MKV files on PS3 - no transcoding required.

Grab MKV2VOB from here. It took me about an hour to convert a 4.5GB file over a 100MB link, and used about 15% cpu on a P4 2.4.

It's currently playing in HD across the network from Twonky server and it's perfect.

GOTsent also works great

So the MKV started off as 4.5 gig. How big was the VOB file?

4.5GB or so. Didn't really check, but approximately the same size, plus or minus whatever the container uses.

Cool.

Will give it a go.

I actually downloaded it and didn't try it yet because I figured the VOB would be bigger.

Anyways I'm hoping someone here may have a solution to playing xvid/dix files that don't play on PS3.

For example. I have downloaded some HD 720p perhaps AC3 .avi files.

Says unsupported when you try to play on PS3 opposed to corrupted.

Anways, I want to convert these files to a compressed format like Divx or Xvid and not lose any quality. Not too worried if I lose AC3 though.

I have tried Super and something else I forget. Neither resultant file worked.

Anyone have a step by step link or anything that they can confirm works. I've tried some step by steps on google without joy.

Fortunately it seems most if not all new rips take the PS3 into mind and seem to work ok. It is just older stuff that is poo.

What's the main difference between this and something using like AllToAvi to convert to DivX? Better quality I assume?

BaM 14th April 2008 18:49

Converting compressed video to any other compressed format fucks the quality.

This just repackages it in a way that's acceptable to the PS3, while leaving the video and audio alone.

hmmm wonder if nero recode works on mkv ...does a GREAT job on converting divx to psp format vids .. fully intergrated..will even ask you plug in yr psp so that it can upload the converted vid.

Yeh that's what I'd like to do. Any tips? :).

1. Load .mkv file into MKV2VOB
2. ???
3. Profit!

Stalker 15th April 2008 11:43

ive been using ps3 video 9 for my mkv files.. for a single tv ep it usually takes about 10 mins to convert.. the final file is mp4 video with mp3 audio.. it doesn't touch the video, just converts the audio then stitches them back together..

seems to work pretty well for me..

I've managed about a 10% success rate with PS3 Video9 - not too flash. It also can't do AC3 audio without transcoding. VOB is the only container that PS3 will play AC3 from.
