Worst Restaurant in Auckland
Capri - Mission Bay.
Ok, me and 5 mates book a table a week or so back for the Jazz Festival tonight. Arrive at 8ish, for when the table was booked, but only 5 of the 6 arrive because one is crook. Order a glass of wine, then a bottle, then 2 pizzas to share as some of us are poor, then one pasta dish. BTW pizzas are 20+ dollars each, as is the pasta. The wine came to $48 dollars. Then POW!, the fat Italian owner, dripping in gold, arrives at the table. "WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING HOLDING A TABLE FOR THE WHOLE NIGHT AND ONLY EATING PASTA AND PIZZA!" "Um, because they are on the menu, and don't forget the wine we ordered." "I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE WINE, WE ARE A RESTAURANT - WE WILL MAKE A LOSS ON THIS TABLE TONIGHT!" Mmmm, with this attitude is it worth insisting on being fed? "Ok, we'll forget the food, we'll just pay for the wine" (against our better judgement). Paid and walked out. Now writing this at home waiting for the re-fried beans to heat up. If the prick was taller, skinnier, spoke decent English and had less jewelry he could have been Basil Fawlty.

If the prick wanted to make more money he should have set a minimum charge for the evening. Why should we take shit because he's stupid?

I would have kicked you out, if it was a thursday/friday/saturday night especially, 5 people at a table you'd at least expect to make an entree, main and drinks off them.

If a restaurant expects a minimum, they should set a minimum per person
It's not hard. Then everyone knows what's expected.

Which place is Capri? He might have really been Albanian
There is a good Indian place called 'jewel of the Nile' in mission bay, a meal would have been $20 each at the most or de fountain there are some hotties there. |

Fuck knows why these smackheads chose a nice Italian restaurant on the Bay if all they had was 20 bucks each. They obviously have no etiquette or common sense. It's just something one wouldn't do. |

i have to agree, you didnt have any money, didnt order shit, and shouldnt have been there in the first place. you think a restaurant is a place where you can have a good time and enjoy good food? think again, its a place the owner is trying to make money off you.

This is a case of needing to learn the rules of a game before you play.
There are restraunts that cater to some of your expectations e.g. McDonalds, Dennys, and Valentines. Any other restraunt, even if only a cat's-whisker nicer, will expect every patron to buy a meal (eating it is optional). If you want to stay for the evening then you need to have bought an experience that takes an evening to deliver e.g. four courses followed by coffee / cheese / port etc. Learn your lesson :-) |

pfft - i wouldn't let it bother you - its nothing personal!
i like fine dining now & then but don't take all the power games too seriously (it amazes me how many people do) to me its obvious that restaurateurs will kiss yr arse & treat you like a v.i.p as long as the price is right. it's a great relationship coz a lot of these folk get to seriously believe that they're important for a change |

if it's pizza, and it's at the jazz festival, i'd get take away.
I was watching Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Many surprises were had. First by the fact it was a musical, second that it was VERY bloody, and third that I really enjoyed a musical. Last edited by Jonas Undrawing : 17th February 2008 at 12:43. |

Agree with common consensus, you're a douche for going into a relatively nice restaurant (Capri is nothing special, have been there) and expecting five of you to bed fed for around $100.
Maybe Iguana/Lonestar would be more accomodating to your crew. If you go to a place like Capri, expect to be spending $50-70 per person depending on the amount of wine/desserts you have. |

Haydos, reading the thread, it is not common consensus that you should be expected to spend a minimum in a restaurant. If there had been a minimum charge made known we would have booked elsewhere.

The common consensus amongst people who go out to dinner often is that you should understand that a restaurant wants to make money and cannot make money if you're only ordering 3 (cheap) meals to share amongst five of you.
Like I said, if you want to have a dinner for 5 for under 100, go to Maccas or Lonestar. |
