It's a way for resolving routing requests, quickly.

format is:

output input [input...]

So if it contains

127.0.0.1 ehg-sonymusic.hitbox.com ehg-space.hitbox.com ehg-ati.hitbox.com

those domain names will resolve to the local machine (ip of 127.0.0.1) so you can use it to prevent things like gator even trying to get onto your machine (if your machine is not looking at the right site, it's not going to find the dodgy bit of software that sneaky website is trying to install)

an entry like:
65.98.19.86 lan.net.nz www.lan.net.nz

allows me to not need to do a DNS look-up when going to lan.net.nz or the sub-domain www.lan.net.nz

You can also use it for IP address translations, and probably other uses too that my small mind cannot comprehend

most likely the image is in the cache of firefox, when you post in firefox, even though that server does not allow hotlink. Without the image in the cache firefox would display that 'don't steal our pics' pic, instead the browser display the real image because the real thing is already in the cache.

But when you view in IE, IE does not have the cache and instead display the 'don't steal our pic' pic straight away.
