Sir Clive Woodward got one thing right on this Lions tour of New Zealand when, on the eve of the test sereis, he suggested something special was about to happen.

The trouble for Sir Clvie was that everything special about this three-test series has been about the All Blacks.

Graham Henry's team swept the DHL Series in emphatic fashion at Eden Park on Saturday evening, blitzing the try count.

Add that to the one-wat traffic in the first test in Christchurch, the spectacular second test win in Wellington and the Lions' consistent struggles in their provincial amtches and there is every chance Sir Clive's mob will indeed go down as the worst Lions side in history. All 52 of them and the $23m it took to assemble them.

Which leaves the "special tag" sitting with the All Blacks. How special? Time will tell on that but one sense there is the potential for a great era here.

Thye spark that ignited in Paris six months ago with that stunning win over the French burned brightly in this series. The pace was simply too hot for the Lions.

Whether it can blaze all the way to the 2007 World Cup remains to be seen.

There have been so many false dawns in the 18 long years since New Zealand last won the World Cup that even the most loyal All Blacks fan would have more than just their fingers crossed by the time the next tournament starts.

But clearly the foundations have been laid and Mir Henry and his wise associates have enough time on their hands to broaden the talent base and tweak the game plan.

This series with the Lions answered some serious questions but also left a few hanging in the air. How good are the All Blacks and how bad were the Lions?

The coming Tri Nations will now be a better acid test fro Henry's troops. That will be a measure of their progress in 12 months considering their narrow wins at home last year against the Springboks and the Wallabies and their poor losses on the away legs in Sydney and Johannesburg.

Both the Aussies and the South Africans will have more muscle, skills and passion to throw at New Zealand than these sorry Lions could muster despite their massive resources from four couintries and a seemingly resurgent British and Irish
game.

But for now we canbask in the glroy of a "special" accomplishment, safe in the knowkledge that some important questions have been answered over the past few weeks.

We have a very spcial talent in Danile Carter in the vital No 10 jersey and a promising back-up in Luke McAlister who survived a baptisim of fire in the third test.

There is life after Justin Marshall with Byron Kelleer superb in the last two tests.

The backs have successfully modified their flat attack to good effect and the wings are plentiful and talented.

The All Blacks' set pieces have taken a leap forward.

Yes there is a need for more depth in the tight five and yes, consistency is stilol to be realy tested.

But Sir Clive was right, something "special" did happen and it was all in the black camp under the guidance of his arch enemy Graham Henry.

Sir Clive was out-thought and out-coached in a series that will haunt him for years to come and threatens to overshadow his labourious World Cup success with Erngland.

Let's hope that if the Lions are still around in 12 years time they can return to New Zealand and produce something a little more "special" than what we have witnessed on this tour.

Always itchy

Do they have those articles transcribed by monkeys, for the web version, or is that the work of a sports "reporter", unaffected by his (literate...) editor?

The monkeys-making-typos seems more likely, but then, do sports "reporters" have to go to reporting school and learn how to spell?
