my solar collector begins its life
not a bad result considering its still quite dirty with adhesive all over it. and only 1/4 finished (those are mylar strips - the rest of the dish is bare steel, which isnt as reflective). Last edited by Vrtigo : 24th October 2009 at 18:34. |

I'm not a fan of the nonsense you post Vrtigo, but your solar collector is cool.

either:
a) steam boiler -> tesla turbine -> smart drive generator - pros: easier to build, less expensive, can use salvage parts, steampunk-esque - cons: inherent dangers of steam boilers, possible death b) stirling engine -> smart drive generator - pros: safer, theoretically more efficient, debatably cooler - cons: hard as fuck to build with a sufficient airtight seal in either case, the end result will be to charge a bank of 12v batteries through a charging system. from there, i can work on phase 2: a 12v DC power system for the house. for the time being, its proof of concept. |

actually, i just had a eureka moment about how to implement a water-tube boiler with a non-fuel heat source, instantly making it safer. so simple, why didnt i think of it earlier..

I third that motion, more details please.
Maybe even start up an alternative energy thread? I'm thinking of running 12v lighting system through the house I'm building too. What was the eureka moment anyway? |

Awesome!!! Do you have to make a special dish or can you use something like a chinese stir fry wok? More info on that eureka moment. Can it be modified to work on home solar water heating?

the dish im using is a standard satellite tv dish. actually, this one is a bit larger than the sky dishes, as you can see from the pics. you can use anything you like, so long as it has a focal point. Last edited by Vrtigo : 25th October 2009 at 18:00. |

"The hole measures 65 metres across, and based on images taken at a variety of sun angles, the the hole is thought to extend down at least 80 metres. It sits in the middle of a rille, suggesting the hole leads into a lava tube as wide as 370 metres across." |

'Monster Shark' Chomps Into Great White A giant shark that could be up to 20ft long has sent shockwaves across Australian beaches after a great white was nearly bitten in half. A stunning picture shows a 10ft predator thrashing about with two massive chunks missing on either side of its body, off the Queensland coast. Experts said its rival may be 20ft (about six metres) long, judging by the size of the huge bites. The great white was savaged after it got snared on a drum line - a baited hook attached to a buoy - near North Stradbroke Island, east of Brisbane. The wounded creature was still alive when a crew hauled it onto a boat, close to Deadman's Beach. "It certainly opened up my eyes. I mean the shark that was caught is a substantial shark in itself," Queensland Fisheries' Jeff Krause told Australia's Daily Telegraph. Swimmers have been warned to stay out of the water near the island. The attack also worried many at a nearby tourist Mecca - Surfers Paradise, south of Brisbane. Surfer Ashton Smith, 19, of the Gold Coast, told the Courier Mail: "I've heard about the big one lurking. Every surfer is always cautious over here." Drum lines and shark nets are used to defend swimmers from sea predators, but they have been criticised for occasionally trapping migrating whales. Fisheries minister Tim Mulherin told the Mail that the capture of the bitten shark - and the indication of a larger one feeding in the area - bolstered the decision to keep defences in place. He added there were no special plans to hunt the attacking shark but contractors had reset the drum lines. |
