A night at the LOTR Symphony *LOTS OF PICS*
OK, so first up the warning...
The camera was bought only hours before this happened and it's my first digital camera so you'll have to excuse any shitty photos. Some were taken without a flash (inside) and I didn't have much joy there. NOTE: Some of the following pics are links to the original, bigger images. --- Intro: Ok, so we knew the LOTR Symphony was on but we hadn't bought tickets because they were too damn much. So anyway - we had blown the joint budget earlier in the day on a Canon PowerShot A80 because, well, we didn't have a decent camera, let alone a digital one and then we heard the news... HALF PRICE TICKETS. We were already over at illuzion and BASTARDS' place to have some sausies and a perve at the shenanigans, so we got Mistress_S to line up for some tickets. We managed to secure 3 A Reserve seats for Myself, Mistress_S and illuzion and then proceded to eat our Sizzlers in bread (classy!). Luckily I had dressed up and shaved before leaving home and was ready to show some style with a snazzy recent haircut to boot... I left the camera at illy's place because I didn't think they'd be allowed but after seeing all the flashs going off during the first 2 movements (mainly at the start/end) I decided to rush back and grab it. So here's the return after the intermission. To backtrack a bit, before the show got underway, Peter Jackson took his seat to tumultuous applause. He was sitting above us, so we didn't really get to see him. After the intermission the same kind of neck-craning took place... The execution of the symphony was very well done, although the male choir for the Khazadum section needed more mikes - they were way too quiet. There were 3 big screens behind the orchestra which every now and then would bring up and scroll/fade etc over (appropriately chosen) sketchs done for the movies (by the design team). The choir was located above and behind the orchestra, masked by black netting. Here's a picture of Howard Shore in action (clickable). After the final notes were played the audience got to their feet... ...to give a standing ovation (note the map of Middle Earth on the screens). People stayed standing and clapping for the next... shit, 10 minutes or so? During this time people went off and came back etc and flowers were given. But wait, the flowers-giver is blocking someone, a singer that sang up and to our right so yet again, we were hidden from the star that was... ...VIGGO! The crowd went crazy-go-nuts when he took the stage. Smile, Viggo... Howard Shore then came back again to wave his hands threateningly at the orchestra and guest singers. Viggo took umbrage and decided to steal Howard's wallet as retribution... "You dropped something Howard!" "Hmm, I can't see anything down here..." "Keeeeeep lookin'." Singers and Howard went off but Howard came back because he'd forgotten to give the choir props. "Sorry guys! You can have my box of porn. I left it out back, it's about thiiiis big." |

Thus ended the symphony but a quick look up revealed Sir Ian erect and happy to be.
No, I'm not shitting you, that's really Sir Ian McKellen! Ok, so those shots sucked shit. Well, the star spotting was just beginning so there was plenty of time for better shots, as everyone piled out to form a throng... The first to leave was John Rhys Davies and I was there, on the spot, as he exited the elevator. He turned and waved to the crowd and I took my shot... just as he turned back. Oh well - here's a pic of his bald spot. We were all outside by this time and cars were lined up to whisk the big names away, but they didn't bloody leave! Richard Taylor did but we didn't get any of him because he says "years" funny... Ok, we sucked at getting those pics as well - but we saw him, honest! After we finally gave up waiting and returned to illy's place, we had a perve from the balcony but nothing much seemed to happen, although Mistress_S and BASTARDS saw some more Fords leaving from the side, so perhaps they were sneaking them out. Finally we left but on the way home we decided we'd drive through the carpark... Just in case. Who should be outside giving autographs before he gets into his car? Why, Howard Shore of course. That photo was taken by Mistress_S while I hastily rummaged around the car looking for a pen. I finally found one and rushed over to get a signature only to watch him close his door and start to drive off. But! Obviously my maniacal run towards him in shorts and t-shirt had assuaged any concerns as to my dubiousness and he got his driver to stop, wound down the window and signed my program. Yus! Howard Shore - you are the man! You've got to respect his musical talent but he's a nice guy as well. A very enjoyable evening and a nice hype up for Monday and the premiere. Goooooooo Wellington! Howard Shore was in Sounds Lambton Quay today signing cds. There was a huge crowd and I had to wait about 1Hr 20mins but in the end he signed my Two Towers limited editon cd case and the cover of my Return of The King soundtrack.
Also saw David Wenham walking down Courtenay Place. And a few people dressed in cloaks and stuff. Last edited by DVD_Freak : 30th November 2003 at 20:25. |

I particularly like the composition, the way the red x is centred perfectly in every single frame. Many pro-photographers would kill to be able to get such consistent symmetry.
