You've got it wrong. Cat's much like squirrels are able to use their own skin in order to parachute in a way. It sounds made up but this is how and why they're able to survive such huge drops - where as they're not able to get the resistance required in order to slow themselves down between the 5th and 7th floor. Anything after the 7th floor and they should survive it.

Yes, but that is why the cat needs to twist itself to 'paws down' and relax - that is the correct position for using the skin as a parachute. Once they are falling the right way and relaxed the skin will catch air and slow them down, they just need enough height for this to all work properly.

yeah - there was an item on QI about this....

A falling cat survives by parachuting, essentially. They spread themselves out and in this way reach a much lower terminal velocity than a falling human.

A cat which accidentally falls (or is pushed, or thrown) from a seventh floor window may not have time to adopt the safe-descent position.

A cat falling from the 30th (or for that matter the hundredth) floor has plenty of time to sort itself out.

There are, apparently, many documented examples of cats that have fallen at least thirty floors and sustained only minor injuries.

There's two steps to the cat thingie,
1) their terminal velocity is non lethal.
2) they right themselves by twisting their back, but need sufficient time to do this.

After they've reached terminal velocity, they relax and twist themselves to the right way up (ie, 5 or so floors up), and will be survivable.

I remember when d2TiTus and I scrapped out this BMW full of punks that couldn't handle losing to a 4age on the motorway. there's nothing like 7000RPM+ in 3rd gear while LAUGHING YOUR ASS off at some Shore homos.
