Hard to be sure. Very few cases feature the offender making a $100,000+ reparation to the victim like Veitch did and the extent to which Veitch has been (albeit deservedly) ruined. Put it this way, I think given the circumstances of this case, the sentence was within an acceptable range that no appellate court will disturb it.

If he had been poor, with no career to ruin, do you think he would have gone to jail? Or is that too hypothetical a question?

Probably still not jail but the sentence could have been slightly tougher.
