lol, I'm kind of opposed to the new film even though I know nothing about it except that they seem to have hired young trendy actors. This goes against what I know my mates who are trekkies would want in a Star Trek film. It's a whole new level of schaedenfreude and I'm not comfortable with it.

I have a problem with this. In the preview it shows the enterprise being built on earth, in some prairie somewhere. But in all of the other star treks (tv shows and movies) these starships are built in space and from my limited knowledge of trek-foo they aren't designed to be atmospheric vehicles. I think JJ just decided he had to have some stupid Top Gun rebel motorcycles up to the big ship scene.

Err no. According to the canon the TOS era Enterprise was built at the San Francisco yards on Earth. TNG era Enterprise was built at the Utopia Planitia yards Mars. I believe Enterprise B was built at McKinley Station in Earth orbit and Enterprise C was another Utopia Planitia project.

Intrepid class, aka Voyager, are explicitly designed to land on a planetary surface and the saucer section of the Enterprise D was definitely designed to land. Both the Enterprise and Enterprise D have both entered an atmosphere and while not happy doing it generally in the episodes in question they were crashing out of control rather than landing per se.

Yes, but don't ask me which episode it was. I vaguely remember seeing it so it must have been an early voyager episode as I gave up on the series fairly quickly. Felt it never lived up to the core of the story the pilot established - which should have been about the hard choice between expediency and high principles when stuck out in the Delta quadrant.

Star Trek was effin' amazing. One of the most watchable movies I've seen in a long time. Excellent casting, and a good blend of humour and action. Also one of the most seamless movies I've seen in a long time in terms of CGI. I almost forgot for quite a while how much CGI was in it.

I saw it last night as well and it was alright. Full of action mixed with some funny scenes. I never liked Star Trek too much, so watching this with limited knowledge on the series, my only conclusion was that they did a pretty decent twist in order to recycle the main characters whilst getting a fresh start in making the series completely irrelevant to the original story. So i hope that this 'new' Star Trek will be more appealing for me in the future. I'd give it 7/10.

I could be wrong but my recall is that they retconned that into the series. The original first series made explicit mention of the shipyards being on Earth. But kinda like the Klingon bumpy forehead the magic continuity wand was waved at some point.

As for the film, having just seen it I quite enjoyed it. Its plot doesn't bear close scrutiny and I have quite a few niggles about ship design, lighting placement & the like. But overall it does a lot of very nice nods to trek lore and tells an entertaining tale.

It was more of a reboot of the series without having to ret con anything, because now it's all an alternative timeline.

Saw it this morning - both of us really enjoyed it.

First time I've been too the movies in years too - I was feeling a little ashamed that Star Trek was what tempted me back but I have none of that now - was well worth it.

Some great laughs, good action, plenty of hat-tips (loved the take off of "Khhhaaannnn") and generally thought it did a great job. I'm not a huge trek fan at all so wasn't worried about the little plot niggles.

Deserves a repeat screening on blueray when it comes out ...

...dunno, thought it was a bit too shiny and colorful, which, I gues is part of the utopean premise ?...but ...hmm, well dunno...I had hoped to enjoy it more, and I guess that was what spoiled it for me.

...also the fact that it was a starwars clone didnt help...I swear I thougt chewie was gonna make one of his noises in teh medal ceremony at the end there :/

Was there really that much? I think all I noticed was Nokia.

My main dislike was the amount of lensflares, there's pretty much one in every single shot for the first half of the movie. Ended up being pretty distracting when I started counting them all.

Gonna join the reoccurring theme in this thread and say that the movie pleasantly rocked.

Went in with low expectations, with the thought of being molested by fat trekkie nerds who would obnoxiously bitch throughout the duration of the film. Thankfully, the nerds kept quiet, but I still felt their effects as their lummox form squished past to go toilet and top up on more candy snacks mid way through.

Could have done with better poon or shown some boobies on existing poon. Anyone else get confused trying to figure out how Kirk was fucking the ginger she-hulk with his undies on?

Visual effects warrant watching this at the movies. Was darn good at Embassy. Watching Vulcan collapse into a black hole was awesome.
