Personal Cinema System
So these little toys came out recently:
www.headplay.com I'm seriously thinking of buying one tomorrow, i live in Canada so its $500ish to ship it here and i think they only ship to USA/Canada at the moment. If anyone is keen I can arrange to buy one and ship it over. It can be connected to pc's/macs/tvs/mp3 players/xbox/xbox 360/wii/ps2/ps3 and portable drives. It gives the user a virtual 52" screen with full immersion and some new display technology other than the RGB of vga monitors. I think it will be pretty impressive except for the lack of being able to see your keyboard while playing games. |

Actually, that's a significant advance - up until fairly recently, the i-Theater HMD (which has been around for a couple of years) was the standard for this sort of thing, and claimed to be equivalent to a 50" display while having a native resolution of 320x240. (Yes, seriously. A lot of places are still selling them.)
They seem to have brought out a newer model at some point, the i-Theater HR (for "high resolution"). This claims to be equivalent to a 70" screen, because it's reached the lofty heights of 640x480 standard VGA. So, yeah, 800x600 isn't so bad, by comparison. Hey, it can almost handle 480p widescreen without dropping any pixels... (Yes, I know, you won't be happy until it can do 1080p natively. I agree, actually, but that's at least a few years off yet...) Last edited by Tarquin : 22nd August 2007 at 20:17. |

Speaking of HMDs, i'm tempted to get a pair of these:
http://www.vuzix.com/iwear/products_vr920.html Or these, if the price comes down: http://www.3dvisor.com/products.php Although i hear current OLEDs have a lifetime of 5-10. |
