Whats needed to setup a Q1 RA server for play over intertubes?

Hey guys.

Just trying to setup a RA server for a we play, well attempt to anyway.
I'm using ezquake-gl (and relavent RA and quake files) it works on a local lan. but don't seem to be able to get a connection between myself and a friend, hes pinholed his router too.

Do we need to use Quakeworld? and if so does that run on Win 7 64/32?

What am I missing?
Any help appreciated.

Setup a hamachi network? Makes it piss easy, we did this a few months back for q1 ctf.
