In the process of getting a family member to buy me one from the States. With student discount around $700+ $NZ cheaper than buying here for the 1.8ghz. Free ipod nano on top of that too

That's one hell of a deal. The discounted price here for the 2.0Ghz white Macbook is currently $2658 (inc GST). It's not a huge discount by any means - the retail store price is $2839 - but meh, I'll take what I can get

that is pretty damn good.
so does this mean you have to order it through the apple website ?

i find getting the retail stores (harvey norman et al) extended warranty is far cheaper than the applecare warranty.

(eg: 3 years through noel leeming is about 150 i beleive)

ask any questions about them if you like..

only had it for a few hours, and i have found

build quality better than Macbook pro
Doesn't whine as much..
gloss screen , im no fan
Keyboard is very nice
the thinkness is the same as the macbook pro when open, when closed a little bit higher.

Overall nice machine, but macbook pro is better:P

Seeing as you have 2 now and like the MacBook so much, how about you give me the Pro and I send my MacBook to Simon, since heaven knows when his is going to arrive?

That's Parallels with VirtueDesktops. You can set it up as one of your 4 virtual desktops then just switch with a key combo or mousing over the edge of the screen. Works very well and is fast even on 512 RAM (though I haven't done much with it so YMMV).

s0nic: no.

Extremely overpriced?

I agree - even though they're cheaper in the US, I'd take this over a higher specced Windows machine any day.

Consider that for the price you get a nice, secure OS that's really a pleasure to use, and it comes with the great iLife software. Not to mention the size, screen quality and battery life. Personally I'd take all that over a slightly faster CPU and bigger hard drive/RAM.

And then there's the system requirements of Vista to consider.

They have pretty good resale value, too, judging by what they go for on TradeMe.

Come into the light, brother!

I was thinking somewhere between $1500-1800 or so. 15" Powerbook G4 (with upgraded ram) in mint condition

Cheers I'll let him know.

Just added 1 1GB RAM stick and wow - HUGE performance increase. Can run tons of apps in 4 virtual desktops and no slowdown at all; everything opens and closes faster.

Best $157 I ever spent

Just Legend ram from C1: link

Same as the Apple spec: DDR2 667MHz/PC2-5300 200-pin.

I looked around for people's experiences and as usual the cheap RAM works just as well as the OMGuBerlowlatency stuff. You have to give the chips a decent push to get them in the slot properly since they have this lever eject mechanism.

They really do like the extra RAM. Running Virtue Desktops with 4 desktops + Firefox, Garageband, iTunes, iPhoto, iCal, Mail, and Parallels running Debian and its as fast as if I'd just booted up. (this gives 120MB free, though there is 660MB inactive).

It's Parallels on a Mac. Like VMWare, is real nice. Looks cool using Expose and that rotatey workspace thing too (esp with smackbook!).

Slap the Mac, switch to windows. Get bored of windows? Smack it to Ubuntu, or smack the other way back to MacOS!

I like the movement sensor, get some funky things happening!

I got Parallels today, very cool. However my core duo mini only has stock 512meg ram so it runs like a dog. I now have a pair of 1gig chips in the mail so that will sort me out.

How did that guy get parallels to fast user switch? I couldn't figure that one out..

If you install Virtue Desktops, Parallels will automatically use one of them (the one to the right) when you go into fullscreen view. You can bind apps to different desktops as well and use keyboard or mouse (edge of screen) triggers to switch.

The manual tells you how to set up networking so XP can use the net.

joy

Fresh off the courier this afternoon, still wrapped in plastic. To apologise for the delays the reseller gave me an MS natural keyboard, MS optical intellimouse, upgrade to 3-year warranty, and upgrade to a black model for free.

everyone rejoice!

oh yeah, the trackpad was driving me nuts (I can't do shit with that pad and one mouse button, although the 2 finger scrolling rocks), and I wanted a solution that didnt need a flat surface. So i got me this bad boy:

The Kensington Expert Optical Trackball. Biggest balls in the mouse industry apparently.
