Yeah - apparantly they were just watching an old Dr Who, and it went pop - It still starts up (but with no splash screen) and the audio works, but no vid. So I guess it sounds like a Plasma driver board. Anecdotal evidence on the web suggests it may be a common 15 month fault, and I'm hoping that the durability clause implied in section 8 of the consumer guarantees act will out play the 12 month warranty (assuming it's reasonable to expect a TV to last longer than 15 months...)

No, the Muppets is not a children's program... what makes you think it is?

Sesame Street is a children's program... the Muppets is just made by the same crew...

In the last few days there have been stories about the escalating Darfur famine/refugee crisis, ever more destructive bombs in Baghdad, college massacres in the US, a spate of local sex attacks and a hit-and-run bus driver, new threats from the US-Iran standoff and increasing evidence of "climate-change + increased resource demand" related water crises; but to me this story is, in so many ways, the most compelling evidence of how idiotic the human race is: http://www.stuff.co.nz/4031990a12.html

Geez - some people are fucken stupid. It's not government spending that is driving up inflation but people speculating in the housing market.

inflation is much more complex than that.

inflation goes in cycles, and our inflation isnt even that high at the moment.
so whatever you read now, youll read more of it for a couple of years at least.

its not easy to determine what type of spending is driving inflation.

the banks are driving it by lending money to make record profits.
individuals drive it by buying houses in the hope of getting rich.
offshore oil companies drive it, as do many other multinationals.
foreign investment drives it chasing our relatively high interest rates compared to the rest of the world.
etc.

inflation is driven by greed...not just by scarce resources.

Lets not forget govt. spending, that contributes a fair bit to inflation (just don't ask me for hard facts, cbf finding them)

The second link I gave has a brief run down on it and agrees with you. It's driven by speculative borrowing more than anything else.

True - I've read that govt spending accounts for between 10 and 20% of inflation. The same article held that between 50 and 75% was from banks printing money in response to demand.

The point being that cutting govt spending like Fran Sullivan wants isn't going to bring inflation under control. As Michael Cullen has pointed out - the present $6.5b surplus is $6.5b taken out of the economy thanks to the govt but inflation is still climbing. Therefore there must be another reason for it to continue to climb and that's the speculators - primarily the ones working in the housing market. Almost all other speculators are going into a holding mode because money is too expensive. Housing, quite frankly, is about the only market left where you can borrow to make money.

inflation? what the fuck is that? no really, profit without inflation? a market based on exponential growth in consumers and product in a finite world? someones going to bleed.... unsustainable.

What drives the housing market? supply and demand, population man, not speculation, it ain't speculation investing in the property market, it's a fucken given, bitches gotta live somewhere, high density housing? just makes my normal property more exclusive, so long as the economic leaders demand an exponential growth in population to fuel the economy there will be inflation, quality of life is being sacrificed on the alter of monetary economics.
