IEEE 1394 and USB 2.0
Ok, the story goes:
My mate has a digital camera and to capture the video on to his desktop he uses the IEEE 1394 port, and on my laptop there is no IEEE 1394 ports, just USB 2.0 ports. So I was wondering if there was some kind of adapter/replicator anything out there that would allow me to capture on my laptop. So after searching I came accross this which looks like it would do the job: http://www.csccable.com/view_product.asp?item_no=20281 So I was just wondering, does anyone know of anywhere in NZ where they would have on of these? Or something similar that would allow me to capture video onto my laptop. Thanks. |

you'd need something like:
DSE Notebook DV Card http://www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.sto...product/XH6632 or DSE CardBus Card IEEE1394 2 Pt http://www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.sto...product/XH6741 |

That second DSE card is not too bad a price for what it is...

Firstly it is very odd for a camera to not support USB....
Are you sure it doesnt have a USB out? (Mini B probably) ascent.co.nz sold those cables, but Madmax is right. its not going to convert firewire.... its just a mini usb to standard usb cable. |

Nice, thanks for the links i'll have to investigate if I actually do need a firewire port, I was just going on what my mate said, he just told me that I had to do it with a firewire port but if thats not the case then great.
[Sorry for late reply, computer buggered up.] |

usb on video cameras is usually only for stil pix
it can't cope with the truput need for DV you need firewire for speed & camera control either that or it's going to be incedably slow

DV cameras use Firewire (IEE1394 / iLink) for controlling the camera, and for signals. They use USB for accessing the still photo section on the camera. Just get a firewire card, they do not cost much. Firewire is faster than USB, so I doubt there are any adaptors out there, plus it transfers data differently (Isonchronous I think, whereas USB was synchronous or something) which would make adaptors a dodgy proposition.

Ok sweet thats no worries, the card is only around $140, was just wondering if there was an alternative.

If USB2 is faster than firewire surely I would be able to capture with it then?

From what I have seen Firewire is currently the fastest in practical terms.

Firewire is faster, it has a better designed architecture...not bad for 1995 or whenever they invented it!
http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/s...393574,00.html I think it is due to the way data is transmitted down the wire. Plus with 800MBit firewire a few months off it will be way out in front again |
