your right it doesnt sound like a depersonlisation experience it sounds like derealisation - which is a symptom of depersonalisation disorder as well as other dissociative disorders. and if he knows that his experiences arent real then your right again it wont be schizophrenia but thats not enough to rule out other schizophrenia-like-disorders such as schizotypal personality disorder (where one of the main criteria is "magical thinking" such as believing in clairvoyance or telepathy etc).

also, just because he is having these experiences and beliefs is far from enough to say that he has a disorder. but if it is affecting his life in a serious way (or those around him) then it is very important that he go and see a psychologist - to at least rule a disorder out.
