Kruppe is a great character. You'll come across one later, if you continue, called Iskaral Pusk who is amusing in the same, but a little different, way.

I have to say, Memories of Ice is my favourite of the series so far, but I did enjoy most. However, it has been commented on that Erikson does take a little while to warm up in his books but they then crack along.

I, personally, like the way he comments on something in an offhand way, and then later in the series it will get more focus and you wonder where you "heard" about it before.
