My personal ethical scheme, such as it is, is heavily relationship-based. I ascribe limited personhood to my family pets and have strong relationships with them -- I really consider them "non-human family members" rather than possessions of the family. As such, yes, I would risk my life for them without thinking about it.
I guess the flip side of this scheme is that I tend to not give a shit about entities with whom I have no relationship. Starving millions in Africa, people dying of AIDS, meh. Statistics.
