I have been looking forward to this big time and have twisted the missus arm to make her go on Thursday! I'm a bit worried about this though..

It's been getting nothing but good reviews on RT

I'm spending this week watching the first 6 movies on Blu Ray so I have some backround.

Very keen on this new movie.

Pleb'a 6th May 2009 11:17

You like the backround on your boyfriend!

Are you saying you're one of those Trekkie fans they're taking the piss out of? :)

In other news... Bree Lindsay.

lol, I'm kind of opposed to the new film even though I know nothing about it except that they seem to have hired young trendy actors. This goes against what I know my mates who are trekkies would want in a Star Trek film. It's a whole new level of schaedenfreude and I'm not comfortable with it.

Not at all, I kinda gave up when the gayness that is Rick Berman fucked the whole thing up.

Agreed, Bree my new fav roving reporter!

erentz 8th May 2009 16:31

I have a problem with this. In the preview it shows the enterprise being built on earth, in some prairie somewhere. But in all of the other star treks (tv shows and movies) these starships are built in space and from my limited knowledge of trek-foo they aren't designed to be atmospheric vehicles. I think JJ just decided he had to have some stupid Top Gun rebel motorcycles up to the big ship scene.

Reformed_Quint 8th May 2009 16:44

yea, they don't look exactly aero-dynamic.

Err no. According to the canon the TOS era Enterprise was built at the San Francisco yards on Earth. TNG era Enterprise was built at the Utopia Planitia yards Mars. I believe Enterprise B was built at McKinley Station in Earth orbit and Enterprise C was another Utopia Planitia project.

Intrepid class, aka Voyager, are explicitly designed to land on a planetary surface and the saucer section of the Enterprise D was definitely designed to land. Both the Enterprise and Enterprise D have both entered an atmosphere and while not happy doing it generally in the episodes in question they were crashing out of control rather than landing per se.

What might be confusing you was that the refit Enterprise, first seen in Star Trek the Movie, was being serviced and refit in space at McKinley Station.

Kinda sad that I remember this shit....

Rocket 8th May 2009 17:03

Jesus I have not seen anyone get so owned since WWII

flic 8th May 2009 17:04

Off to see this tonight at 9pm

Heh, So what Star Trek character did you got Armageddon dressed as then?:D

Was there ever a Voyager episode where it landed on a planet?
The whole thing not just the saucer section, I'd be interested to know how
it does it given its shape and design.

Yes, but don't ask me which episode it was. I vaguely remember seeing it so it must have been an early voyager episode as I gave up on the series fairly quickly. Felt it never lived up to the core of the story the pilot established - which should have been about the hard choice between expediency and high principles when stuck out in the Delta quadrant.

One quick google later :-

Screenshots n'all.

combatspoon 8th May 2009 17:16

Star Trek was effin' amazing. One of the most watchable movies I've seen in a long time. Excellent casting, and a good blend of humour and action. Also one of the most seamless movies I've seen in a long time in terms of CGI. I almost forgot for quite a while how much CGI was in it.

Ah, thanks for clearing that up, now I can happily go watch it.

Oh wait I just googled it: http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/San_...co_Fleet_Yards

Quote:

San Francisco Fleet Yards (also known as San Francisco Navy Yards or simply San Francisco Yards) is a Starfleet shipyard located in Earth orbit, with its shore offices probably located in the city of San Francisco. There is also an orbital office complex near the drydocks of the yard.
:(

Update: yeah in orbit, more here: http://www.startrek.com/startrek/vie...cle/70377.html

Channelling Ron Moore again eh?

Brave Warrior 8th May 2009 20:50

I saw it last night. I liked it a lot... :) It wouldn't surprise me if there were more to come with this cast. Ahura has never looked better ;)

com 8th May 2009 22:59

IMO.

I saw it last night as well and it was alright. Full of action mixed with some funny scenes. I never liked Star Trek too much, so watching this with limited knowledge on the series, my only conclusion was that they did a pretty decent twist in order to recycle the main characters whilst getting a fresh start in making the series completely irrelevant to the original story. So i hope that this 'new' Star Trek will be more appealing for me in the future. I'd give it 7/10.

Cyberbob 8th May 2009 23:56

I really liked it, but it did seem like the Dir of Photography just discovered the lens flare tool

I could be wrong but my recall is that they retconned that into the series. The original first series made explicit mention of the shipyards being on Earth. But kinda like the Klingon bumpy forehead the magic continuity wand was waved at some point.

As for the film, having just seen it I quite enjoyed it. Its plot doesn't bear close scrutiny and I have quite a few niggles about ship design, lighting placement & the like. But overall it does a lot of very nice nods to trek lore and tells an entertaining tale.

duckmannz 9th May 2009 00:45

Is it just me or did the time travel get put in there because it's easier and to get rid of "hur hur hur, that totally couldn't happen because in series 2 episode 12..." etc.

That would be sad :(

p01s0n 9th May 2009 01:02

Perf and I saw this tonight, thoroughly enjoyed it in its entirety. _b

iiNEMESISii 9th May 2009 01:16

 just went an saw it And it rocked !!
shatner be damned this ant no Denni crane fantasy!!
loved the new cast and reboots the whole timeline thing again from 25 years ago ?
so yeah it does stop all the nerd raaaage venting
JJ probably had to have an open ended movie for the investers to get another 12 blockbuster series out of it !!!
$$$$$$$ <---this stuff does crazy things to people

BadNova 9th May 2009 01:17

Saw it tonight on IMAX, enjoyed it a lot _b

But when Scotty mentioned Admiral Archer, I was worried they were going to do a Scott Bakula cameo...

iiNEMESISii 9th May 2009 01:57

It was more of a reboot of the series without having to ret con anything, because now it's all an alternative timeline.

I liked it because it was a) all filled with explosions and action for the new viewers but b) absolutely packed with references for the fans.

[Malks] Pixie 9th May 2009 15:47

Saw it this morning - both of us really enjoyed it.

First time I've been too the movies in years too - I was feeling a little ashamed that Star Trek was what tempted me back but I have none of that now - was well worth it.

Some great laughs, good action, plenty of hat-tips (loved the take off of "Khhhaaannnn") and generally thought it did a great job. I'm not a huge trek fan at all so wasn't worried about the little plot niggles.

Same, the technobabble is something that polarises so many people normally.

Nemises 10th May 2009 07:06

not a trekkie here, but I got a bit sucked in by the hype and good reviews, and TBH, thought it was just "ok".
Deserves a repeat screening on blueray when it comes out ...

...dunno, thought it was a bit too shiny and colorful, which, I gues is part of the utopean premise ?...but ...hmm, well dunno...I had hoped to enjoy it more, and I guess that was what spoiled it for me.

...also the fact that it was a starwars clone didnt help...I swear I thougt chewie was gonna make one of his noises in teh medal ceremony at the end there :/

it was ok at best. about 15 min of cool action, the rest was shortland street
was there this much drama/love scenes in the og movies? i was hoping for more science fiction, less teenage drama, but maybe i expected too much

Dusty 11th May 2009 00:15

Liked - Everything
Disliked - The product placement. ST was never about recognisable conglomerates.

loved the movie, very well put togeather bit of work.

what really cracked me up is after the movie finished i was heading back to the car and behind me i could hear a hardcore trekkie giving his girlfriend the entire back history of the romulans (sp?) and the vulcans, all he got in reply was 'aha, aha, aha, aha, aha'

lots of effort to contain laughter was required.

[WanG] Wandarah 11th May 2009 01:14

i give it 4 out of 5 stretched sphincters.

Was there really that much? I think all I noticed was Nokia.

My main dislike was the amount of lensflares, there's pretty much one in every single shot for the first half of the movie. Ended up being pretty distracting when I started counting them all.

buckies 11th May 2009 11:29

Gonna join the reoccurring theme in this thread and say that the movie pleasantly rocked.

Went in with low expectations, with the thought of being molested by fat trekkie nerds who would obnoxiously bitch throughout the duration of the film. Thankfully, the nerds kept quiet, but I still felt their effects as their lummox form squished past to go toilet and top up on more candy snacks mid way through.

Could have done with better poon or shown some boobies on existing poon. Anyone else get confused trying to figure out how Kirk was fucking the ginger she-hulk with his undies on?

Visual effects warrant watching this at the movies. Was darn good at Embassy. Watching Vulcan collapse into a black hole was awesome.
