10.5 - eh?

Bah.
Stupid mini series' tv 2 picks up for $2.
Had some good actors, and some decent effects..but the writing really bothered me.

Interesting sidenote: A film all about the destruction of Cali-forn-nigh-A...was shot in Vancouver..heh

ZuldaN 8th June 2004 00:43

Damnit, I really wanted to see this.

Did anyone videocap it or know someone who did?

CCS 8th June 2004 00:54

Didn't see it, but I just can't buy Beau Bridges as the US President 0_o

eff tee 8th June 2004 01:02

It was absolute rubbish IMHO. All American patriotism and martyrdom, and deathbed soulsearching.
I wondered how none of those experts equipment ever stopped working, even thought their office was falling down round their ears.
And I just couldn't take Beau Bridges seriously as the American President I'm afraid.

Meh.

MadMax 8th June 2004 01:23

yep, what FT said. totally stupid, could only watch a few minutes of it.

ilk 8th June 2004 01:29

***Quasi Spoiler***Not that it matters unless you taped it but hey, it's only polite***

I got a lot of pleasure out of humming "Aenima" during the destruction sequence, up until everyone survived, even the namby pamby sidekick to Kim Delaney. I so wanted him to be crushed by that falling tower, but nooooo.

Trigger 8th June 2004 01:37

that was absolute crap

flic and I did a pretty good job of bashing it on Sunday nite, but unfortunately I went to see Dawn of the Dead tonite and missed the second half

special effects were painfully shit

mmm... painful shit...

Haha that was so bad.. had to laugh at the breaking news banner that read 'MARSHAL LAW'..

Er, who's Marshal Law?

Either some pretty crappy filmmaking, or the best, most subtle simulation of CNN I've ever seen :P

drake 8th June 2004 08:54

i didnt watch it becuase it looked lame but wouldnt the government of envoked marshall law , aka the army taking control of the citizens ? maybe thats what it meant ...

deCAFE 8th June 2004 09:17

yep thats what it means

A Corpse 8th June 2004 09:17

The term is "Martial law". :D

Is a 10.5 earthquake even possible? Wouldnt it fuck shit up major?

The richter scale is exponential afterall.

drake 8th June 2004 09:55

Richter TNT for Seismic Example
Magnitude Energy Yield (approximate)

-1.5 6 ounces Breaking a rock on a lab table
1.0 30 pounds Large Blast at a Construction Site
1.5 320 pounds
2.0 1 ton Large Quarry or Mine Blast
2.5 4.6 tons
3.0 29 tons
3.5 73 tons
4.0 1,000 tons Small Nuclear Weapon
4.5 5,100 tons Average Tornado (total energy)
5.0 32,000 tons
5.5 80,000 tons Little Skull Mtn., NV Quake, 1992
6.0 1 million tons Double Spring Flat, NV Quake, 1994
6.5 5 million tons Northridge, CA Quake, 1994
7.0 32 million tons Hyogo-Ken Nanbu, Japan Quake, 1995; Largest Thermonuclear Weapon
7.5 160 million tons Landers, CA Quake, 1992
8.0 1 billion tons San Francisco, CA Quake, 1906
8.5 5 billion tons Anchorage, AK Quake, 1964
9.0 32 billion tons Chilean Quake, 1960
10.0 1 trillion tons (San-Andreas type fault circling Earth)
12.0 160 trillion tons (Fault Earth in half through center,
OR Earth's daily receipt of solar energy)

Limit 8th June 2004 10:05

I saw them get owned at the end.

Well, I'm not sure if you watched the mini series but basically, 10.5 was the san adreas fault coming apart around or through southern california, effectively tearing a huge rift through the land. Was kinda cool to see for a mini series (I mean it's free vs a movie you'd have to pay for).

:P

rubberchicken 8th June 2004 12:21

I laughed my ass off at the fact that they moved everyone out of the cities and directly into the path of the massive fault.

Also, it doesn't matter how the scale actually goes, would you have even bothered to watch 9.3?

DMZ_Chainsaw 8th June 2004 12:32

I changed the channel when I saw that train being chased by the fault line. I mean how lame is that? I expected that in a Superman movie but this?

Thank goodness for the doco on the History channel.

too slow cinclant :D

Danzail 8th June 2004 13:01

The music did it for me =/ Even more than the typical American acting and patriotism, the music just screamed cheesey mini series.

Same, and the fault stopped once the train fell in !!

more cheese than that new wendys burger

and yes, the train had to be the worst part.. reminded me of tremors

ilk 8th June 2004 13:26

Just remembered another bit of crappiness: The whole "Hey look ma, I'm Bruce Willis from Armageddon" thing was uber-lame. And unlike Bruce, he didn't actually save anybody.

Las Monkey 8th June 2004 13:36

Didn't see the first part but watched about 3 seconds, realised it was shit and watched 'what becomes of the broken hearted' instead, which was a far superior movie.

Boyd-Work 8th June 2004 14:18

The image of Hollywood being eaten up by a great big gaping crater was a pretty apt metaphor though.

Rabble 8th June 2004 15:51

Anyone else get a LOL out of the camp quake scene?

Redneck 8th June 2004 16:50

Saw the last half hour - the dude getting atomized by the nuke lying on top of him was hilarious.

Overall a pathetic effort, but the last scene of the creation of a new bay did make me think what a staggering thing it would be to witness.

AxioN 8th June 2004 20:39

Was going to watch it but picked Once were warriors / What become of the broken hearted instead.

Brandoo 8th June 2004 21:00

Watched about 20 mins of it - what rubbish.

Did anyone else out there find the constant zooming in and out and quick changes of camera angles really really annoying?

P-Money 8th June 2004 23:41

Any bets on what they would of called the new island? (after they stopped walking around going "fuck, my old town is now an island surrounded by a big arse salt water river and im lazy yank that never learnt to swim..darn"

Really the island name should be something Tool related, homages are important.

Shoulder Deep River and Third Eye Island anyone? (hey its kindad like 3 mile island..)

Toksin 8th June 2004 23:49

H Island

(-) Island

Isle of The Grudge

Avoided the "movie" due to my general prejudice towards made for TV movies. Watched D-Day instead.

Nuclear 8th June 2004 23:58

I watched what becomes of the broken hearted. I usually find those "made for tv" mini-series rather boring. While channel surfing, i did see Kaley Cuoco starring in it though.. that may have made it a little better

Caesar 9th June 2004 00:22

I only watched it coz I saw a nuke going off in the previews.

Some tv movies are great...usually done by the british. Threads and The War Game come to mind. Both british and both about nuclear war (a difficult subject in anyones books).
