Component Video Switches
 

We have the situation where we want to be able to use our DVD players component video out (Y, Pb, Pr) to watch DVD's on either the Plasma TV or Projector. I've looked on Trademe, DSE and Jaycar but cannot find any device that will allow us to take a single component output and switch it to 2 different outputs.
Does anyone know of a source of such a device?

If you do need to past the audio on, any composite AV selector will work fine too.

If you're playing to buy a Amplifier at anytime though, quite a few of them have AV selectors built into them.

You didn't read hard enough. Those are multi-input to single output, which is the opposite of what Drgnfire is after.

But most of these should work the other way around, DSE or Jaycar should let you return them if they don't, just ask beforehand.

The composite one I have 2 outputs, I can't tell from the descriptions or images on DSE or Jaycar whether they do aswell.

How could they possibly work the other way around? I can tell you for a fact that the Joytech one doesn't, because we have one with our consoles plugged into it and I'm fairly certain the connectors marked "output" only do output.

Depends how the electronic switching is done, if it's just a bypass without any sort of signal detection or manipulation it should be fine. If it's a physical switch, ie no electronics it'll definitely be fine. My composite selector is just that a physical switch, you can use the audio jacks in combination with the video jack for your YUV or RGB.

OK I don't really want to get into a big argument over this, but you're talking about a six input electronic A/V switch that supports composite HD video and has an IR remote.

There's no way it's mechanically switched and you won't be driving a signal backward through it in a hurry. It's not what Drgnfire is after so I'm not sure why you're even debating it based on some stuff you read online.

I've researched the crap out of what was available on the market not 3 months ago, and then bought one, so I have some idea what I'm taking about.

I've got one - I think its components

takes up to four inputs (switchable) to two outputs - so its always pumping a feed to the TV (and projector) but if I'm not using it the output device its off and who cares....

takes a feed from the xbox or decoder.

The Jaycar site says that's just standard A/V (and S-Video on one of the outputs, so it's doing some internal processing), not component.

The one MadMax linked claims to be just video, though, and explicitly says it works for sending one signal to multiple destinations, so it should do what Drgnfire wants. (Check it out in-store first if possible, though...)

I would be careful about putting a YUV signal (Esp. HD) through a box designed for composite/audio as it may not be shielded sufficiently and you could end up with ghosting all over the place.

I'm not saying it won't work in this case but you'd definitely want to take it for a test drive first.

Looks like it might just be easier to put to component video on to the projector and just run S-Video on to the plasma (as we'll more than likely use the projector mainly for movies anyway!).

Couldn't you just use some sort of splitter? There might be issues with the signal quality being degraded though, but I'm not certain. Bam?

Splitting it halves your brightness, so it's not a good option. You need to either switch it, or split it and amp the signal.

Yeah, that's why for sending simultaneous signals you use what's called a distribution amp. I doubt places like DSE would have decent ones for component connections. You'd have to look at more specialised outlets, like this:

I don't know about YUV, but I know that this plus this works for RGB.

I may be able to get my hands on a 2nd hand component switcher/amp thingy for you, I'll post here if I can.
